The Speedo Grand Challenge took place 2 weeks ago. Although I didn't swim season best times, I was able to walk away with more experience and more drive towards World Championships in 44 days.
What makes this swim meet unique is the fact that only the top 4 from prelims advance to the championship final. The top qualifier then spins the "money wheel" seconds before the race, which reads the payout of cash prizes. The standard prize distribution is 1st $300, 2nd $200, 3rd $100 but can change depending on the money wheel. It can read "winner takes all", "prizes doubled" among others.
200m Free: 26.08 54.13 (28.05) 1:21.76 (27.63) 1:49.42 (27.66)
I managed to come up with the win despite being slower than 3 weeks ago in Charlotte. That said, I was able to bring home the last 50m faster than ever this season. This gives me a lot of confidence moving forward.
400m Free: 3:55.18
I ended up getting 2nd in this race. Coach Salo wanted me to swim it differently than usual. He told me to go ALL OUT after the first 200m. Needless to say, it hurt pretty bad.
I have 2 weeks before my next competition: Santa Clara Grand Prix. This will be my final serious tune up towards Shanghai.
Take care everyone!
Time is flying by lately. It’s been a fun two weeks filled with fast racing, movie premiers and a wedding. Needless to say, it’s been a busy two weeks.
I was out in Charlotte, North Carolina, two weeks ago for the Charlotte UltraSwim Grand Prix. This is the second time I have attended the swim meet. I had a blast. It’s obviously always fun when you are swimming fast, but what was the best part of the meet was organization of it. The swimmers area was filled with comfy couches, large flat screen TV’s with video games and replenished with fruits and drinks at almost a 10 minute basis. In my 10 years of competitive swimming I have never seen anything like it. It was unbelievable. I also really enjoyed having the crowd so close to the pool. It was fun marching to the starting blocks and having a bunch of little kids holding up their hands for high fives. Everyone was super friendly and I met a bunch of swimmers of tomorrow.
My swimming went well. I managed to win both the 200m and 400m Freestyle. With my times of 1:48.55 and 3:52.00 respectively, I am on the right track towards World Championships in 51 days from today. I also swam the 100 Free in 50.37 which is a good time for me in season. I’m extremely happy with where I am with my training right now and am using the swims in Charlotte to motivate me for the next few weeks of training. The big goals are still ahead. I posted a video of the 200m Freestyle on my Facebook Page. Be sure to check it out.
I was fortunate enough to be invited to the movie premier of ‘Midnight in Paris’ the other night. It was really cool seeing Owen Wilson in person. My all-time favorite movie of his has to be ‘Wedding Crashers’. ‘Midnight in Paris’ is a very artsy movie about a man who thinks life in Paris in the 1920’s is better than life today. Definitely a must see if you know your history and are interested in literature.
My teammate Eric Shanteau tied the knot this past weekend to long time girlfriend Jeri Moss. It was a beautiful wedding (granted, I really haven’t been to many… 2 to be exact). The reception was perfect, the ceremony was magical and the dinner was fantastic. I posted some pics on my Facebook page. I wish nothing but the best to the newly weds!
